There are certain medical conditions that children with Down Syndrome have a higher chance of facing than their typically developing peers. The more severe include heart defects resulting in open heart surgery (25%) and although rare (1%) Leukemia. Others that can be common but more easily managed are:

Sleep apnea- difficulty breathing while sleeping. Dysphagia- swallow disfunction where thin liquids go to the lungs instead of down the esophagus. Hypotonia- low muscle tone which requires children to receive physical therapy and sometimes orthotic braces for support in walking.
